So now that we have shared some of KHAIR's background with you and how to get involved in the program, we would like you to hear directly from the people involved in the program. We could tell you ourselves how great it is, but we feel the best way for you to understand how much it impacts the ones participating in the program is to let them tell you themselves.

After being enrolled into the KHAIR program my client who was somewhat rough around the edges has progressed tremendously. At our first meeting with the community relations specialist, there was some concern of whether this child would be appropriate for the program. The child presented as being very nonchalant with no enthusiasm about the program. There was definite tension between mom and child as well.

Fast forward to the present, my recent reports of child by the community relations specialist is that the child is doing great, she participated at all the meeting and that the stylist loves her and her family. I have also seen growth in this particular child since her enrollment.

UPDATE : My client got his first appointment with the stylist last Saturday. I have not seen him, since he got a job (may be it was the new hair cut) and I only saw his mother. She reported that she was there with him and the experience was great!! She was happy with the results. They dedicated a long time giving him a massage, pampering and taking care of his hair which is extremely damaged.

I have 2 children involved in the program:

African American female with a history of neglect and suicidal thoughts, reported always feeling invisible before starting the KHAIR program. Since starting the program she has tried out for a part in a commercial, which she got! She also started sharing her poetry with friends, and is getting some of her work published in the school newspaper. Her confidence and self-esteem has been fantastic. Her mood is drastically better. Even when there is turbulence in her life she is approaching the problem much differently and is able to appropriately cope.

Caucasian female who is almost 18 years old was having trouble finding direction in her life and was so tired of failing that she began to give up. Since starting this program her motivation and engagement has been fantastic. She beams with pride when she gets her hair done and has now decided to go into cosmetology. She has formed a great relationship with the stylist, and that relationship has given her confidence and motivation to pursue what she loves.

The young man from JOTLAB that is participating in KHAIR absolutely loves it. He recently had his first visit to the barbershop and came to program the following Monday with a great deal of confidence. He has a lot of inconsistency in his life and the program provides something that is structured, safe, and consistent for him. He has stated a number of times that he is looking forward to the second workshop that is going to be held.
